For International Women’s Day on March 8, the Borough of Saint-Léonard honoured eight women during a virtual ceremony attended by the mayor of the borough, city counsellors, and Liberal MNA Filomena Rotiroti. The women were recognized for their community involvement and commitment to the residents of the area.

Among the honourees was Stéfanie Bertrand Beaudin, a youth worker in the YMCA’s Alternative Suspension Program. This program encourages school perseverance by allowing participants to take a step back and identify what empowers and motivates them. Stéfanie was recognized for helping 58 students who were suspended from Saint-Léonard High School as well as for her involvement in fighting COVID-19. During the summer of 2020, she distributed masks and gloves in the community, and raised awareness of how we can all work together to stop the spread of the virus.

Congratulations Stéfanie on this well-deserved honour and thank you for your commitment to the well-being of your community.

About the YMCA’s Alternative Suspension Program

School dropout is a national crisis. School suspensions and other disciplinary measures are early indicators of a student’s potential to disengage from school. YMCA Alternative Suspension is a dropout prevention program designed to counter these risk factors.

Developed by the YMCAs of Québec in the fall of 1999, the program is offered to secondary level schools to support students who, for different reasons, are temporarily dismissed from the school setting.
