Media Invitation - Kent Nagano Honoured at the 30th Edition of the YMCA Peace Medals

For 30 years now, the YMCA has recognized peacemakers who strive to build a more peaceful society. This year will be no exception, but it will be an exceptional one. In fact, not only are the YMCAs of Québec celebrating the 30th edition of the Peace Medals, they are also celebrating their 165th anniversary! Presented by Desjardins, this major event benefitting children, young people and families will unfold under the kindly gaze of Maestro Kent Nagano, to whom the YMCAs of Québec are proud to award an honorary medal for his commitment to helping youth in the community through music.

To mark the beginning of the City of Montréal’s festivities for the International Day of Peace, the YMCAs of Québec will award 2017 YMCA Peace Medals to six other laureates who dedicate themselves every day to promoting equality, inclusion and respect. You will meet Laurent Champagne, recognized for his involvement in the social reintegration of former inmates. You will also meet the members of the No Hate Speech Movement, which helps youth become better citizens; the Youth Services of the YWCA Montreal, which actively combats violence against women; and Destination Centre-Ville, which promotes harmonious living and social reintegration. The event will also be an opportunity to talk to the creators of Radio Dodo, a station that broadcasts stories across battlegrounds and refugee camps to soothe children. Finally, the YMCA could not ignore Balade pour la Paix, a popular exhibition celebrating Montréal’s 375th anniversary with a message of peace and tolerance.

Geneviève Borne, who is also very involved the community and passionate about music, will lead the event. The master of ceremonies will present Trio Acero, a band influenced by Latin, jazz and classical music whose original songs have been critically acclaimed in the music world.

The Peace Medals is the most important event celebrating peace in Québec and pays tribute to all those who, every day, build more harmonious communities and a better future for Québec youth. You are warmly invited:
