| Placement Tests |

All students must pass a placement test before they can register for a course.
All students who have completed and passed a particular level or course and who wish to register in another level or course can do so without passing a placement test as long as it is done within 6 months of finishing the previous course.
Tests are free every Wednesday. The following are the times for placement testing for the different languages that we teach:
French and English : 12:30pm – 5:30pm
Spanish : 12:30pm – 5:30pm
Italian : 4:30pm – 5:30pm
Portuguese : 4:30pm – 5:30pm
Mandarin : 4:30pm – 5:30pm
There is a $20 charge for testing at all other times.

Description of Levels
Level 1

Level 1
|
|
This level introduces the student to the language and culture of Brazil.
This basic course is for those who have never studied Portuguese. Level 1
includes phonetics, basic vocabulary, and verbs and expressions in the
present tense so that students can begin to form simple sentences.
At this level you will learn the different forms of address, as well as
the gender and plural form of nouns. You will also practice reading,
learn to tell the time, and have a simple telephone conversation.
You will conjugate the verbs
Ser,
Estar and
Ter
in the present tense.

Level 2
|
|
This level is for students who have a basic knowledge of Portuguese.
The objective of this level is to build vocabulary and learn some elementary
grammatical structures needed to understand written and spoken messages that
occur in a variety of situations. You will review what you have learned in level 1.
You will conjugate the verbs
Ter,
Querer,
Saber,
Fazer in the present and past tenses,
and you will learn the prepositions of place, the numbers 100 and up, and the indefinite
and interrogative pronouns. You will also continue to learn more about the Brazilian
culture.

Level 3
|
|
This course is for students who can express themselves in a limited fashion in Portuguese
in certain situations. You wish to improve your grammatical knowledge and increase your
vocabulary in order to better communicate ideas both written and spoken. Reading
comprehension will also be addressed. You will also be able to discuss future plans,
tell stories, talk about events in the past and future, and describe people.

Level 4
|
|
At this level, students are now expressing themselves with a certain level of confidence
in more complex situations but wish to increase their knowledge of the language, as well
as speak with even greater ease. You will review the verb tenses - simple present and
present continuous, the past and future tenses - that have been taught in the previous
levels. You will have oral practice around discussions of articles and texts.

Level 5
|
|
This course is for students who already have a good level of fluency in Portuguese, but are interested in furthering their knowledge of the language, both spoken and written. We will review all verb tenses previously taught. You will learn idiomatic expressions and direct and indirect speech; you will study texts, analyze them and express your opinions concerning these texts; you will learn to use the subjunctive and the conditional forms.
