| Placement Tests |

All students must pass a placement test before they can register for a course.
All students who have completed and passed a particular level or course and who wish to register in another level or course can do so without passing a placement test as long as it is done within 6 months of finishing the previous course.
Tests are free every Wednesday. The following are the times for placement testing for the different languages that we teach:
French and English : 12:30pm – 5:30pm
Spanish : 12:30pm – 5:30pm
Italian : 4:30pm – 5:30pm
Portuguese : 4:30pm – 5:30pm
Mandarin : 4:30pm – 5:30pm
There is a $20 charge for testing at all other times.

Description of Levels
Level 1
Level 2

Level 1
|
At this level, you acquire the basic grammar and vocabulary needed to converse in Italian.
Our communication-based courses immediately plunge you into real-life situations: greetings,
asking for information, expressing likes and preferences. In Level 1, you study regular and
irregular verbs in the present indicative. You also learn vocabulary on the following themes:
the weather, family, food and travel. By the end of this course, you are able to tell time and
routine activities.
Listening and reading strongly encouraged.

Level 2
|
After reviewing the material in Level 1, we dive deeper into the language.
Theoretical concepts introduced in Level 1 become more concrete through more complex and
realistic simulation exercises.
In Level 2, you study the past perfect and learn to talk about past events (your last
vacation, for example). You conquer imperatives, and asking for and giving directions. You
learn contractions of prepositions. In addition, you can identify yourself, situate yourself
in space and describe activities in the present.
Listening and reading skills improve.

Level 3
|
You already have a functional knowledge of Italian. At this level, you strengthen your listening
and reading skills. You are able to carry on a meaningful conversation and express your point
of view, both in writing and verbally. We encounter imperfect object, and direct and indirect
object pronouns are introduced.
Reading, writing, giving presentations and taking part in discussions are all encouraged.

Level 4
|
|
You join in debates and write personal compositions. You are urged to express yourself on specific topics
using the future, past, present, conditional and some subjunctive tenses. Familiarity with the
vocabulary of the media is gained through newspaper articles read in class.
